The Spanish Shawl (Flabellina iodinea) is a nudibranch, a shell-less marine mollusk, found along the Eastern Pacific coast, where it crawls across rocky reef surfaces and kelp beds at relatively shallow depths. Its body is a deep violet-purple, covered in densely packed orange-tipped cerata (the finger-like projections along its back) that give it an almost feathery appearance. It's genuinely one of the more visually arresting animals you'll encounter in the nudibranch world, and that appearance has drawn the attention of marine invertebrate keepers for decades. In the wild it moves slowly across benthic surfaces, constantly searching for prey, primarily hydroids, which makes feeding in captivity a real challenge. Sourcing and maintaining a steady supply of appropriate live food is the main hurdle, and it's why this species is firmly in the advanced-keeper category. Tank mates need to be chosen carefully, since its slow movement makes it vulnerable to nipping or harassment from active fish. The Spanish Shawl is best suited to a species-specific setup or a very peaceful, well-researched reef system. Its short natural lifespan means even a perfectly kept specimen won't be a long-term resident, so go in with realistic expectations.
