The boesemani tetra (Hemigrammus boesemani) is one of those fish you might encounter once at a specialist retailer and never see again, so if you spot it, it's worth grabbing. Native to the rivers and coastal drainages of French Guiana and Suriname, as well as parts of the upper Amazon in Peru, this small characin gravitates toward calm, slow-moving waters and swampy habitats in the wild. It shares these environments with close relatives like Hemigrammus rodwayi, and a well-researched community tank can reflect those natural associations nicely. As a shoaling fish, it genuinely needs company. A group of at least six, though ten or more is better, and you will quickly see why when the school moves together. Its temperament is thoroughly peaceful, which is both a virtue and a vulnerability: boisterous or much larger tankmates will stress it out. It sits comfortably alongside other small South American characins, pencilfish, Corydoras, Apistogramma, and even some smaller West African cichlids like Pelvicachromis. Breeding is possible but requires a dedicated setup with soft, acidic water and dim lighting, as the eggs and early fry are light-sensitive. The genus Hemigrammus as a whole is taxonomically unsettled, so the classification of this species may shift in the future.
