The golden pike-characin (Boulengerella lucius) is a sleek, predatory fish from the sprawling river systems of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, where it cruises near the surface hunting smaller fish with a long, pointed jaw packed with small, curved teeth. Its body is built like a missile, tapered and streamlined, and it belongs to the family Ctenolucidae, a group distinguished by that elongated snout and a fleshy tip at the end of it. Identification can be tricky in the trade, as juveniles are often mixed up with the related B. maculata; look for randomly scattered dark spots on the lower sides and the absence of a continuous lateral stripe to confirm what you have. Behaviorally, this species is not the brawler its "aggressive" tag might imply. It gets along fine with anything it cannot fit in its mouth, and younger fish actually school quite willingly. Adults become more independent over time but still appreciate the company of their own kind, so keeping four or more together works well. Suitable tankmates include large cichlids and robust catfishes; other surface-oriented species are risky companions. Breeding has not been documented in captivity. The honest caveat here is that despite sometimes appearing in the trade as juveniles, this fish grows large enough that very few hobbyists have the space to house it properly for its full lifespan.
