The spotted pike-characin (Boulengerella maculata) is a slender, torpedo-shaped fish from the major river systems of South America, including the Amazon, Tocantins, and Orinoco basins, where it hunts smaller fish in open water. It carries scattered dark spots across the upper body and a broad, sometimes faint midlateral stripe that can vary noticeably in intensity between individuals. Possibly linked to the water chemistry of its native habitat rather than geography. The body shape and elongated jaws place it in the family Ctenoluciidae, a group defined by their tapered form, single rows of curved teeth, and a distinctive fleshy appendage at the snout tip. Despite the aggressive label, this species is generally peaceful toward anything it cannot fit in its mouth. The real concern is its role as an ambush predator for smaller tankmates. Calm, similarly-sized fish like eartheaters or loricariid catfish make the best companions. Juveniles school readily, and adults still prefer the company of their own kind, so keeping four or more is recommended. The species is notably skittish and can injure itself by bolting into hard surfaces when startled, so a large, quiet setup with minimal disturbance is essential. Breeding has not been documented in captivity.
