A deep-water Amazonian catfish with no widely accepted common name, Brachyplatystoma capapretum is one of the lesser-known members of a genus that includes some of the largest catfishes in South America. It ranges across the Amazon mainstream from the river's mouth near Belém all the way upriver to at least Iquitos in Peru, with records also from major tributaries including the Madeira, Negro, Purus, and Juruá. In the wild it favors deep channels over mud and sand substrates, often collected well offshore in open water rather than along vegetated margins. Adults develop a very dark upper body with an abrupt transition to a paler belly along the flanks, while juveniles display dark spots or blotches on and above the lateral line that are notably larger than those seen in the closely related B. filamentosum. That close relative is the species most likely to cause confusion, though filamentosum grows dramatically larger, has longer maxillary barbels, and shows a more gradual countershading pattern. In an aquarium setting, tankmates need to be large enough that they are not simply viewed as food. Captive breeding has never been achieved. Despite a beginner care rating in the structured data, the adult size alone demands careful planning before acquiring one.
