About

The Candycane Pygmy Goby (Trimma cana) is a tiny saltwater fish from the Western Pacific, turning up across reefs in the Philippines, Palau, Fiji, the Marshall Islands, and the Caroline Islands. In the wild it favors steep outer reef slopes, where it spends its time perched directly on hard coral surfaces, either alone or in loose small groups. That coral-clinging habit is one of the most distinctive things about this fish. It genuinely lives on the reef structure rather than just swimming near it. At barely an inch when fully grown, it qualifies as a true nano fish, and a modestly sized reef tank suits it well. Temperament is peaceful and active, making it compatible with other small, non-aggressive tankmates, though its diminutive size means it should not be housed with anything large enough to see it as a snack. As a carnivore, it will need appropriately tiny meaty foods, think copepods, baby brine shrimp, and similar fare, which is where the intermediate care rating comes from. It isn't a difficult fish exactly, but meeting its dietary needs consistently takes a bit more intention than feeding larger, less specialized species. Lifespan runs roughly three to five years under good conditions.
