The Banded Toby (Canthigaster valentini) is one of those fish that punches well above its weight in personality and ecological interest. Found across a huge stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to the Tuamoto Islands, it lives among coral heads and rocky patches on lagoon and seaward reefs. Its bold pattern of dark saddles over a pale body is famous for a reason. The filefish Paraluteres prionurus has evolved to mimic it almost perfectly, apparently gaining some protection from predators by tagging along with groups of tobies. In the wild, these fish form shoals of ten to a hundred or more individuals, though males are fiercely territorial and will spar with each other regularly. The social structure is haremic, with one dominant male patrolling the territories of several females and spawning with a different female each day. Diet in the wild leans heavily on algae and tunicates, with invertebrates rounding things out. Which is the main caveat for home aquariums, since this fish will cheerfully nibble corals, worms, and small invertebrates. That makes it a poor fit for reef tanks but a manageable and rewarding choice for a fish-only setup, and its compact size makes it accessible even without a huge system.
