The Wimple Piranha (Catoprion mento) is one of the more unusual fish you'll encounter in the piranha-keeping world, and also one of the most misunderstood. Despite the name, it isn't technically a true piranha. It's the sole member of its genus, though it sits close enough to Pygocentrus species that the resemblance is hard to miss. The name itself comes from the German word 'Wimpel', meaning banner, a reference to the elongated leading rays of the dorsal fin that develop in mature fish. These extensions are a real showpiece, though they're easily lost during transport and sadly won't regenerate. The scientific name references the fish's distinctly protruding chin, which is part of the hardware behind its unusual feeding strategy: rather than tearing chunks of flesh, it rams prey at speed and uses its specialized teeth to knock loose and consume scales. In the aquarium, this creates obvious problems for tankmates. Juveniles can be kept in groups, but adults, females especially, become increasingly aggressive and are best housed alone. Despite being listed as beginner-level in some sources, this species demands stable, well-maintained water with frequent small changes rather than occasional large ones, and its rarity in the trade means it's really best suited to keepers who already have some experience with predatory South American fish.
