Spotted Snakehead

The spotted snakehead (Channa punctata) is one of the smaller and more manageable members of a family that can otherwise grow to genuinely unruly sizes. Native to a vast stretch of South and Southeast Asia, ranging from Afghanistan and Pakistan through India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and into Yunnan province in China, this fish occupies sluggish, often turbid environments: muddy streams, ditches, ponds, swamps, and shallow waterlogged areas known locally as beels. That murky, low-oxygen habitat explains a lot about how the spotted snakehead is built. Like all snakeheads, it is an obligate air-breather, surfacing regularly to gulp atmospheric air, which means it can tolerate water conditions that would stress most aquarium fish. The elongated, cylindrical body is patterned with irregular dark spots and blotches along a greenish or olive-brown base. Useful camouflage in its natural weedy surroundings. In the aquarium it is a dedicated carnivore, taking worms, feeder insects, and chopped fish or shrimp readily enough. It is best kept alone or with similarly robust fish of comparable size, as smaller tankmates are simply considered food. This is an intermediate-level species that rewards a keeper who understands its predatory nature and provides a secure, well-covered tank.
