Gunther's Cichlid (Chromidotilapia guntheri) is a West African species with a wide natural range stretching from Liberian coastal rivers eastward through lower Cameroon and into Equatorial Guinea, inhabiting both forested waterways and adjacent savannah streams. That broad distribution has produced some visible regional variation across populations. Fish from Cameroon, for instance, tend to show dark blotching on the dorsal fin that sets them apart from other forms. In the aquarium the species is territorial and non-gregarious once mature, meaning a single bonded pair is generally the safest approach. Community setups can work, but tankmates need to be chosen carefully. Peaceful open-water characids or cyprinids are solid choices, while other cichlids should only be included if there is plenty of space to avoid resource competition. What really makes this fish memorable is its breeding behavior. It is a biparental mouthbrooder with a distinct division of duties: the male takes the entire freshly-laid clutch into his mouth for incubation, while the female focuses on defending the territory around him. Once the fry are free-swimming both parents continue to guard them, and when danger threatens the young can retreat into either parent's mouth. Despite its territorial nature, Gunther's Cichlid is considered manageable for newer cichlid keepers willing to plan their setup thoughtfully.
