Agassiz's dwarf cichlid (Apistogramma agassizii) is one of the most recognizable members of a huge and complex South American genus, found across a broad stretch of the Amazon and Solimões river system from Peru well into Brazil. Males are noticeably larger than females and can be quite colorful, with the aquarium trade having produced numerous selectively-bred color forms beyond the wild-type fish. This is a species where the sex ratio matters: the classic approach is to keep one male with several females, since males will not tolerate rival males and will defend territories vigorously. Females take on all parenting duties after spawning, depositing eggs inside caves or crevices and guarding the fry with real intensity. In tighter quarters the male is often best removed once eggs are laid, as the female's defensive drive can tip into genuine aggression toward him. Captive-bred fish are generally a more practical choice for community setups and tend to adapt more readily to typical aquarium conditions. Wild-caught specimens are better suited to a species-focused tank, ideally alongside small, unobtrusive dither fish rather than other Apistogramma. Providing caves and broken lines of sight is essential to managing the territorial dynamics of any group. This is an intermediate-level species that rewards careful setup with genuinely engaging behavior.
