Known in the trade as the panda dwarf cichlid or Nijssen's dwarf cichlid, Apistogramma nijsseni is a compact and characterful fish from the Carahuayte River drainage in Peru, a blackwater tributary system feeding into the Ucayali River. In the wild it inhabits dim, vegetation-choked creeks where the water is soft and acidic, and that preference for shaded, plant-dense environments should be reflected in any aquarium setup. Males are noticeably larger than females and will not tolerate rival males in the same space, making territorial management an important part of keeping this species successfully. Females take the lead when it comes to spawning care. Eggs are deposited in crevices or small cavities, and once hatched, the female guards the fry with impressive intensity. In a smaller tank that protectiveness can escalate to the point where removing the male becomes necessary. Captive-bred fish adapt more readily to community situations than wild-caught individuals, and if you do keep wild stock, pairing them with small, unobtrusive dither fish like pencilfish works well. This species is best described as an intermediate-level fish. Not especially difficult, but it rewards keepers who pay attention to water quality and give it a well-structured, naturalistic setup.
