Found in the river drainages of Venezuela's Orinoco basin, including the Portuguesa, Aracua, and lower Caura rivers, Apistogramma hoignei is a compact dwarf cichlid that rarely exceeds two and a half inches. It belongs to the macmasteri complex, a group within the broader regani lineage, and hobbyists tracking locality-specific forms may encounter it listed under the DATZ codes A116, A117, or A118 depending on where the fish were collected. Keeping collection data straight matters here, since mixing geographic variants risks hybridization. Like many of its relatives, this species breeds in caves and crevices, with the female taking sole charge of egg and fry care. She can become intensely protective after spawning, and in tighter quarters the male is often better off moved to a separate tank before things turn territorial. Wild-caught individuals tend to be more sensitive and are generally best kept on their own or alongside small, unobtrusive dither fish like pencilfish rather than mixed with other Apistogramma. Tank-raised fish are considerably more adaptable and suit a wider range of community setups. Soft, slightly acidic water reflects their natural habitat and brings out the best in terms of health and color. An intermediate-level species, not particularly demanding once conditions are dialed in.
