Found in the shallows of Lake Victoria, Haplochromis chromogynos is one of the many endemic haplochromine cichlids that evolved in that vast and ecologically complex East African lake. This species appears to stick to the littoral zone, hugging firm-bottomed nearshore areas rather than venturing into open or muddy water. In the wild its diet leans heavily on caddisfly larvae, including the sand-grain cases those insects construct, with occasional chironomid midges and mayfly nymphs rounding things out. That dietary profile hints at a fish that actively picks through substrate and debris looking for prey, which fits the foraging behavior commonly seen in this group. In the aquarium, it will generally accept a varied diet without much fuss, though offering some meaty fare alongside standard cichlid foods makes sense given its natural preferences. Like most Victorian haplochromines, it carries the intermediate care label for good reason. These cichlids can be assertive, and tank dynamics, especially around breeding, require some thought and planning. A species tank or a carefully chosen cichlid community with appropriate tankmates tends to work better than mixing it into a general African cichlid setup. Given how many Lake Victoria endemics have faced serious pressure from habitat loss and introduced predators, keeping and spawning this species carries a quiet conservation value as well.
