The Clarion angelfish (Holacanthus clarionensis) is one of those species that turns heads at any fish store simply because it almost never shows up in one. Its natural range is remarkably restricted. Centered on the Revillagigedo Archipelago and Clarion Island off the Pacific coast of Mexico, stretching down to Clipperton Island and the southern tip of Baja California. That remote, isolated distribution makes wild-caught specimens genuinely rare in the hobby. Visually, it follows the bold patterning typical of Holacanthus angels. A warm orange-yellow body marked with blue highlights, particularly vivid in juveniles that display the vertical blue-and-white barring common across the genus before transitioning to adult coloration. Like most large angels, it is an omnivore in the wild, grazing on sponges, algae, and invertebrates. In the aquarium it can be kept with appropriate tankmates, though its intermediate care rating reflects the demands of any large Pacific angel. A spacious setup, stable water quality, and a varied diet are all part of keeping one successfully over its potential 10-15 year lifespan. This is not a beginner fish, but for a keeper ready for the commitment, it is one of the more genuinely uncommon angels available.
