The Tahiti butterflyfish (Chaetodon trichrous) is a regional endemic found only around the Society Islands, Tahiti, and the Tuamoto Islands in the eastern Pacific. A distribution so limited that it rarely makes an appearance in the hobby. In the wild, this species inhabits lagoon reef environments, where it tends to be found alone or in bonded pairs, the latter being especially common during breeding periods. Its limited range makes it an uncommon find compared to the widely distributed butterflyfishes most hobbyists are familiar with. In terms of temperament, it is generally peaceful and tends to coexist without much friction alongside typical reef tankmates, which makes it a reasonably manageable choice once you can actually source one. That said, like most butterflyfishes, it deserves a spacious, well-maintained setup and a keeper who understands the dietary and environmental demands of the group. Chaetodon trichrous is a carnivore, so varied meaty foods are the foundation of a good feeding routine. It is classified as intermediate in care level, meaning this is not the best starting point for a first saltwater tank, but it is well within reach for someone who has kept marines before and wants something a little out of the ordinary.
