Found in the Congo Basin of central Africa, Tetraodon schoutedeni has a notably restricted range. Most reliable records point to Pool Malebo, the broad lake-like section of the Congo River near Kinshasa, rather than the basin at large. This makes it one of the more geographically limited puffers in the hobby, and wild-caught specimens are correspondingly uncommon in the trade. Like its relatives, it's a dedicated carnivore in nature, picking off snails, worms, and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. That beak-like dental structure means hard-shelled prey isn't just acceptable. It's genuinely important for keeping the teeth worn down. In terms of temperament, the usual puffer warnings apply: this species is aggressive toward others of its own kind and is best kept alone or with very carefully chosen tankmates. It is, however, a strictly freshwater animal. No salt needed or desired. On the positive side, it's considered one of the more approachable puffers for newer keepers willing to do their homework, provided the aggression factor is respected from the start. Males reportedly guard egg clutches laid on flat surfaces, which is a more involved reproductive behavior than you'd expect from a fish this size.
