The red-spotted copeina (Copella eigenmanni) is a slender, small characid from the blackwater and clearwater habitats of the Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela, with additional populations reaching the upper rio Negro and upper rio Putumayo drainages. In the wild it gravitates toward heavily vegetated, sheltered bays along riverbanks, and a well-planted aquarium suits it perfectly. Identification relies on a combination of details: a broad dark stripe running from the snout tip to the eye with a paler stripe above it, a silvery-white belly, and the position of the dorsal fin sitting noticeably closer to the tail than to the gill cover. It is a peaceful species and generally manageable for beginner keepers, though it shows best in a species-focused setup or alongside similarly sized characids, small catfishes, and non-aggressive cichlids rather than in a busy general community. Buying a mixed-sex group of eight to ten individuals encourages natural schooling behavior and brings out the males' colors as they compete for female attention. Breeding is genuinely rewarding. Males guard egg clutches deposited on broad leaves or among fine-leaved plants, and with a mature, well-planted tank some spawning can happen without any special intervention, though a separate breeding tank improves results significantly. This species shows up occasionally in the trade, often tucked into wild-caught shipments from the Orinoco region.
