The Rainbow Copella (Copella vilmae) is a small, slender characid from the blackwater and clearwater streams of the upper Amazon basin in South America. Males are the showier of the two sexes, dressed in warm reddish-orange and gold tones with iridescent scales that catch the light differently depending on the angle. A subtle but genuinely attractive display. Females are plainer and a touch smaller, as is common in the genus. In the wild, these fish inhabit soft, acidic waters with low mineral content, often stained brown by decomposing plant matter, and replicating those conditions in the aquarium is really the key to keeping them well. That means soft, acidic water is non-negotiable here. This isn't a species you can fudge the chemistry on, which is why it's best suited to someone who already has experience dialing in blackwater conditions. Given the right setup, they're peaceful, active little fish that do well in groups and spend most of their time in the mid and upper water column. A well-planted tank with dim lighting and some surface cover suits them nicely. Feed a varied diet of small live, frozen, and prepared foods and they'll reward you with good color and relaxed, natural behavior.
