Found in Peru, this small dwarf cichlid, Apistogramma cinilabra, stands out from its many relatives in a couple of unmistakable ways. Males carry distinctively ash-grey lips, the trait their name references, along with red pectoral bases and reddish spots across the chest, plus a noticeably deep body paired with a short caudal peduncle that gives them a chunky, compact silhouette. They belong to the sprawling Apistogramma genus, which currently contains over 70 described species with many more still awaiting formal recognition. In the aquarium, tank-raised specimens tend to be fairly forgiving and settle comfortably into peaceful community setups alongside small characins, rasboras, or Otocinclus. Wild-caught individuals can be more sensitive and are generally better kept with only small dither fish for company rather than mixed with other Apistogramma species. Males become territorial around breeding time and will bicker with rivals, though a single male can coexist with multiple females in a spacious tank if you keep an eye out for bullying. This is a substrate-spawning species; females take primary responsibility for guarding eggs and wriggling fry while males typically resume territory patrol. Given that wild populations may face conservation pressure, building a captive breeding group is a worthwhile goal for anyone seriously interested in the species.
