Found in fast-flowing, crystal-clear acid streams with sandy bottoms in Peru, Apistogramma pantalone is a miniature dwarf cichlid that earns attention for having some of the most elaborate and drawn-out courtship behavior in the entire genus. The male leads the process with repeated head-jerking approaches toward the female, zig-zagging pursuits, and eventually a cave-based courtship dance that hasn't been documented in any other Apistogramma. What makes reproduction even more unusual is that this species is a facultative mouthbrooder. It can either spawn in the conventional substrate-spawning manner typical of the genus, or take the newly hatched fry into its mouth, a trait shared with only a small handful of close relatives. In the aquarium, tank-raised individuals are surprisingly peaceful and adaptable, settling comfortably into calm community setups alongside small characins, rasboras, or Otocinclus. Wild-caught fish are considerably more delicate and demand very soft, acidic water and careful attention to water quality. Successful imports are uncommon and captive-bred specimens rarer still. This species circulates in the hobby under several trade names including "Lyretail 1" and "Gabelschwanz," and care should be taken not to mix it with the closely related Apistogramma martini, which it resembles closely.
