The Saddle Corydoras (Corydoras ephippifer) is a small, peaceful catfish from Amapá in northern Brazil, a state tucked along the coast where the Amazon basin meets the Guiana Shield. Like all members of family Callichthyidae, it wears a coat of bony plates rather than scales. The armor that gives this entire group its 'armored catfish' nickname. What sets this species apart from several look-alike corys is its fins: aside from the dorsal, every fin is completely transparent and unmarked, a useful identification clue once you know to look for it. It is a facultative air-breather, meaning it can gulp atmospheric oxygen directly using a specially adapted section of intestine. You will see this behavior in the aquarium as fish make quick dashes to the surface. Perfectly normal, not a sign of trouble. Worth knowing for handling: the hardened pectoral-fin spines can break skin and cause real pain, and secretions from glands at their base may carry mild venom, so a net rather than bare hands is the sensible approach. Keep a group of at least four to six, as these fish are genuinely gregarious and behave more naturally, and more visibly, in larger numbers. With proper care they can live remarkably long lives, making them a genuine long-term commitment.
