The Guapore Corydoras (Corydoras guapore) is a small but genuinely unusual member of a genus that most hobbyists assume never leaves the substrate. Native to the Guaporé River basin in South America, this species has evolved a noticeably different body plan from the typical cory: a more symmetrical profile, a larger eye, a slightly more forward-facing mouth, and a more deeply forked tail. These aren't just academic details. They reflect a fish that actively forages in the water column and regularly forms midwater aggregations, which makes it a genuinely distinctive sight in a community tank. It shares its home region with several lookalike relatives, including C. caudimaculatus and C. similis, but C. guapore can be told apart by the combination of its body shape and its midwater habits. Like all callichthyid catfishes, it wears bony plates rather than scales, and it can supplement gill breathing by gulping atmospheric air at the surface. Perfectly normal behavior that should not alarm you. The pectoral spines are sharp and potentially venomous, so use a soft net or a container when handling. Keep a group of at least four to six together, as they are gregarious fish that become noticeably more active and confident in numbers. Breeding is possible but uncommon, and raising the fry demands careful attention to water quality.
