Found in the western Amazon drainage of eastern Ecuador and Loreto, Peru, this small bottom-dweller, Corydoras napoensis, belongs to the so-called elegans group alongside species like C. elegans and C. bilineatus. Telling them apart takes a careful eye. The most reliable field mark in this species is a dark blotch in the upper portion of the dorsal fin, and even then it's the males that show it most clearly. Females can be genuinely difficult to pin down, not helped by the fact that C. napoensis and C. elegans share the same wild habitats and frequently turn up mixed together in import shipments. Like all corydoras, this species is armored rather than scaled, carrying two rows of bony plates along each side, and sports sharp pectoral fin spines that can catch on nets or break skin during handling, so take care there. It's a confirmed schooling fish and noticeably bolder and more active when kept in a group of six or more. You'll also occasionally spot it making quick trips to the surface to gulp air. A normal physiological behavior, not a distress signal, though more frequent visits can hint at declining water quality. It gets along peacefully with virtually any non-aggressive tankmate. Barbel health is closely tied to substrate cleanliness, so regular maintenance matters. With good care this species can live well beyond a decade.
