Ornate Corydoras

Found in the lower Tapajós River basin of Brazil, this ornate corydoras, known scientifically as Corydoras ornatus, is a solidly built little catfish that sits on the larger end of the Corydoras spectrum. It has the typical armored body and whiskered face that define the genus, and while source notes keep the description brief, it earns its species name with a noticeably attractive pattern. One of the more unusual traits in this group is facultative air-breathing. These fish will periodically dart to the surface to gulp air, which is completely normal behavior rather than a sign of poor water quality. Just make sure there's enough clearance between the waterline and your hood so they don't knock themselves on the way up. Like all corydoras, this species is genuinely unhappy in small numbers. A group of six or more is the practical minimum if you want to see confident, active fish rather than nervous ones hiding in corners. They're a peaceful addition to community setups alongside small characins, dwarf cichlids, and similar easy-going species, though anything large or boisterous will stress them out. Captive breeding is undocumented for this species specifically, but standard corydoras methods, cool water changes, a higher male-to-female ratio, and varied conditioning foods, are a reasonable starting point. With lifespans potentially reaching 20-plus years, this is a genuinely long-term commitment.
