A rarely seen gem from the upper Negro River basin in South America, Corydoras robineae is better known among hobbyists as the bannertail cory, a nod to the bold patterning on its caudal fin that sets it apart from most of its cousins. Like all corydoras, it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp atmospheric air and absorb oxygen through the stomach lining. A completely normal behavior, though you will want to leave a few inches of clearance between the waterline and the tank lid to prevent bumped heads. This is a peaceful, sociable catfish that does best in a group of at least six; kept in smaller numbers it tends to be shy and inactive, but a proper school brings out its natural confidence and keeps it busy foraging across the bottom. It fits well in most community setups alongside small characins, dwarf cichlids, and other calm species, though it should not be mixed with anything boisterous or predatory. This species is considered intermediate in care partly because breeding can take some patience. It follows the same general approach as other corydoras but can be slower to respond to spawning triggers. Worth noting: these fish can live an exceptionally long time with good care, so be prepared for a genuine long-term commitment.
