A rarely described catfish from the Guaporé River basin of Brazil, Corydoras spectabilis earned the informal nickname 'millennium cory' because it was the first catfish species formally described in the year 2000. Though technically the paper appeared in a January 2000 journal while the work was completed in late 1999. It's a nicely patterned cory with spotted body markings that set it apart from several look-alikes sharing its range, including C. guapore, C. similis, and C. caudimaculatus. If you want to tell them apart, focus on body shape and the sharpness of the caudal spot, which in spectabilis has a clean, well-defined edge. Like all corydoras, this species is a facultative air-breather, occasionally darting to the surface to gulp air directly. Perfectly normal behavior, but worth knowing so you leave adequate clearance under the tank lid. Peaceful to the core, it does best in groups of six or more, where individuals are noticeably more active and confident. Community tanks with small characins, dwarf cichlids, or other calm bottom dwellers are ideal pairings. No documented captive breeding records exist for this species specifically, though general corydoras breeding techniques should translate reasonably well given what's known about its close relatives. With a potential lifespan stretching well beyond a decade, this is a fish worth choosing thoughtfully and setting up properly from the start.
