Strawberry Anemone

The club-tipped anemone (Corynactis californica) is not a true anemone at all. It belongs to the corallimorpharia, a group that sits somewhere between anemones and stony corals. Native to the eastern Pacific coast from Canada down through Mexico, it's commonly found attached to rocky surfaces from shallow tide pools down to around 45 meters. In the wild, these animals frequently form dense, colorful colonies that paint reef walls in shades of pink, red, orange, and purple, which is where the nickname "strawberry anemone" comes from. Each individual is tiny, rarely reaching more than an inch across, but the distinctive knobbed or club-shaped tips on the tentacles make it easy to identify even at a glance. In the aquarium, Corynactis californica is considered a manageable choice for those newer to keeping invertebrates, preferring subdued lighting and gentle water movement rather than the intense conditions demanded by many reef inhabitants. It is reef safe and tends to stay put once settled. If conditions suit it, it can reproduce and gradually spread across available rock surfaces, eventually forming the same kind of colorful patches you'd find on a California reef wall.
