The featherfin cichlid (Cyathopharynx furcifer) is one of Lake Tanganyika's more theatrical residents, found drifting in loose groups along rocky slopes where it picks plankton from open water. Males develop intense, shifting coloration and elongated ventral fins tipped with egg-like structures. These aren't just decoration. During spawning, males excavate wide crater nests in sandy substrate and display vigorously to attract females. When a female approaches and attempts to mouth those fin-tip "eggs," she actually receives sperm, fertilizing the clutch she's already holding. It's one of the more clever fertilization strategies in the cichlid world. Females carry 10 to 40 eggs for up to three weeks without eating, so a watchful eye helps during brooding. In the aquarium, this species does best as the dominant fish in the tank. If outcompeted or stressed, males fade and become reclusive. Peaceful but capable tankmates like larger Cyprichromis or Altolamprologus work well; avoid boisterous mbuna entirely. A group with one male and several females spreads aggression and encourages natural behavior. Water quality is genuinely important here. Males only reach full color potential under consistently clean, hard, alkaline conditions. The patience required to grow young fish into their adult form is real, but the payoff is a fish that puts on a display unlike almost anything else in freshwater.
