The Dwarf Spotted Danio (Danio nigrofasciatus) is a small, slender fish native to the rivers of northern Myanmar, and one that has become noticeably scarce in the hobby over the past few decades after once being fairly common. Its patterning sets it apart from close relatives like the zebrafish. Rather than clean longitudinal stripes, it carries a spotted anal fin and a comparatively narrow central body stripe, details that take a little practice to appreciate but reward a careful eye. Despite being listed as aggressive in some trade sources, this species is actually quite peaceful in practice, though its timid nature means it can struggle in busy community setups where bolder fish dominate. It does best either in a species-only arrangement or alongside similarly quiet, small fish from Myanmar. Think Celestichthys choprae, nano rasboras, or dwarf badis species. By nature it is a schooler, and keeping a group of eight or more genuinely transforms the display. A larger group reduces skittishness, encourages males to show their best coloration as they compete for female attention, and simply looks far more natural. Breeding is possible in a home aquarium but this species produces fewer eggs per spawning than most of its relatives, so patience and a controlled setup are worthwhile if raising fry is the goal.
