The Aruli Barb (Dawkinsia arulius) is a medium-sized cyprinid native to the Cauvery basin in southern India, where it inhabits rivers, streams, and lakes. Adults carry three large, diffuse dark markings along the body and a dark blotch on the caudal peduncle. A pattern that distinguishes them from closely related species like D. tambraparniei, which is actually the fish most often sold under this name in the trade. One reliable way to tell them apart: male D. arulius lack the filamentous dorsal-fin extensions that males of D. tambraparniei display. The species was formerly listed as critically endangered, which is worth keeping in mind as context for responsible sourcing. In the aquarium it is active and peaceful, though its size and energetic swimming mean it needs a decent-sized tank and bold tankmates that won't be overwhelmed by the constant movement. It is a true schooling fish, and keeping eight or more together not only reduces skittishness but also channels any male rivalry into internal group dynamics rather than outward aggression toward other species. It pairs naturally with other riverine cyprinids and loaches. Breeding follows the typical egg-scattering pattern of the family, with no parental care, and it can live upward of ten years under good conditions. A longer commitment than many hobbyists expect from a barb.
