Native to forest streams in Borneo and Sumatra, Barbodes everetti is a peaceful, active schooling fish that has spent decades hiding in plain sight. Most fish sold under this name in the hobby are actually Barbodes dunckeri, a visually similar species from Peninsular Malaysia. The real B. everetti is a comparatively subdued fish, identifiable by its smaller, darker body markings and a distinctive dark blotch at the rear base of the dorsal fin, traits that set it apart once you know what to look for. In the wild it occupies the quieter margins of clear foothill streams and even very shallow forest puddles, picking at worms, crustaceans, insects, and plant matter. In the aquarium it carries that same easygoing character, suiting a peaceful community alongside similarly sized cyprinids and loaches from its home region. Like most barbs it really needs to be kept in groups of six or more. A proper school reduces skittishness, looks far more natural, and keeps any low-level squabbling focused inward rather than directed at tankmates. It's a forgiving choice for newer keepers who can meet its basic need for space and company. Breeding follows typical egg-scattering cyprinid patterns, though it appears to be rarely documented specifically for this species in the aquarium.
