Found in the swift, clear streams and mountain rivers of India, Myanmar, Thailand, and the upper Mekong basin, this active schooling fish, Devario regina, belongs to a cluster of closely related deep-bodied species all sharing a characteristic blue-and-yellow lateral stripe pattern. Distinguishing it from its congeners like D. aequipinnatus or D. malabaricus can require a close eye, but in a well-kept group it's a genuinely attractive fish with good movement and color, especially when males start competing for dominance. And that energy is the key thing to understand about keeping this species well. It is not aggressive in any threatening sense, but its constant motion and bold feeding style can stress out slower, more timid tankmates. It does best alongside other robust, similarly active fish. Many cyprinids, loaches, catfishes, and larger characins make good companions. A group of at least eight to ten individuals is strongly recommended, since a larger school keeps individuals calmer, looks far more natural, and channels any competitive behavior inward rather than outward. Males also tend to show their best colors when surrounded by rivals. Spawning is straightforward for a cyprinid of this type, egg-scattering with no parental care, and with good conditioning, fry can appear in a mature planted tank without much intervention. A solid choice for a lively, mid-sized community setup.
