The discus tetra (Brachychalcinus orbicularis) is a deep-bodied, disc-shaped characin from the coastal river drainages of Suriname and Guyana, where it likely moves in groups through warm, softwater habitats. That rounded, almost circular profile is what sets it apart from most other tetras you'll encounter. It looks like someone compressed a silver dollar tetra into a smaller package. It's not a common fish in the trade, and identifying it with certainty can be tricky since several related Brachychalcinus species look similar and are sometimes mixed up in the hobby. In terms of behavior, this is a peaceful fish overall, but it has enough energy and presence that it can unsettle shy or very small tankmates, especially when food hits the water. For that reason it works best in a roomy community alongside similarly sized fish. Think medium-sized cichlids like Geophagus or Heros, other robust characins, or catfishes like corydoras and plecos. Like most schooling species, it really should be kept in groups of eight or more. A larger group keeps individuals calmer, looks far more natural, and redirects any squabbling into harmless social posturing within the school. For a beginner willing to plan the tank around its social needs, it's a genuinely rewarding and unusual choice.
