The Dotted Cardinalfish (Fowleria isostigma) is a modest little reef and coastal dweller from the Indo-Pacific, where it tends to occupy muddy substrates and rocky patches rather than the brightly lit coral structures that many of its relatives favor. That preference for dimmer, more sheltered environments is worth keeping in mind when setting up a tank for this species. Rockwork with plenty of hiding spots and shaded areas will help it settle in and behave naturally. Like most cardinalfishes it is a carnivore, so a diet of meaty frozen and live foods suits it well. At a maximum size somewhere in the neighborhood of three and a half inches, it stays compact enough for a reasonably sized system. Care is rated at an intermediate level, which likely reflects its need for appropriate water quality and a well-structured environment rather than any particular sensitivity to food or tankmates. Source data on its social behavior is limited, but cardinalfishes as a group tend to be peaceful and can work well in community setups with other non-aggressive species. If you enjoy smaller, understated fish that reward patient observation, this is a species worth considering.
