The Dusky Narrow Hatchetfish (Triportheus angulatus) is one of those species that deserves far more attention than it gets in the hobby, especially given how abundant it is across much of the Amazon River basin. It's a surface-oriented, laterally compressed characin with remarkably developed pectoral muscles. Not just for show. In the wild, these fish use that musculature to launch themselves clear of the water, either to snatch flying insects on the wing or to escape predators, with leaps reportedly spanning several metres. That alone makes a tight-fitting lid non-negotiable. In its native habitat, you'll find it schooling over sandy-bottomed rivers, where it feeds on a wide mix of fallen fruits and seeds, aquatic invertebrates, insects, and small crustaceans. So variety in the diet is appreciated in captivity too. Behaviorally, it's a peaceful fish, though its active disposition and adult size mean very small or slow-moving tankmates can end up stressed. It fits well in a South American community alongside Geophagus or Satanoperca cichlids, similarly sized characins, or larger catfish. Keep it in a proper group, as lone specimens rarely settle. Breeding has not been reported in aquariums, so this one is purely a display fish for now. And a genuinely rewarding one at that.
