Pangio sp. pan02 is one of those fish that remind you how much of the aquatic world remains undescribed. This slender little loach has not yet been matched to any formally described species, though it belongs to the kuhlii-oblonga group within the genus Pangio, a widespread Southeast Asian lineage that ichthyologists call eel loaches. It appears to reach the trade as an accidental inclusion in shipments of a plain brown Pangio species, and genetic work hints the two may actually be variants of the same fish. Whatever its true identity, it displays the classic Pangio body plan: long, sinuous, and built for squeezing into tight spaces. Like others in the genus, it is a social creature by nature, and keeping a group of at least five or six together is important. Left in smaller numbers these fish become stressed and reclusive. Given room to school and plenty of cover, they are active and engaging. One practical note worth knowing: all cobitid loaches, including this one, carry retractable spines just below each eye. These can snag in nets and occasionally break skin, so handling calls for a bit of care. Origin in the wild remains unknown, and breeding has not been documented. Despite being labelled beginner-suitable in terms of water chemistry tolerance, its social needs and mystery status make it one to research before buying.
