Found along the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi, Sciaenochromis fryeri is a fish that turns heads the moment a mature male comes into view. Males develop an intense, almost electric blue coloration across the entire body, with variation in fin markings depending on the geographic morph. And those morphs should never be mixed, as they hybridize readily. Females and juveniles are more subdued in color, as is typical for Malawian cichlids. In the wild this species is a dedicated fish-eater, hunting the fry and juveniles of other cichlids among the rocks. That piscivorous nature means careful stocking is essential: smaller, slender fish are at risk, and similarly colored species, especially male Aulonocara, can trigger aggression or even unwanted hybridization attempts. Despite being a robust predator, it is not particularly aggressive toward non-competing tankmates and works well alongside larger peacocks, haps, and Cyrtocara moorii. Keep one male per tank unless the system is very large, and run a group with multiple females to spread the male's attention. Breeding follows a mouthbrooding pattern common to Malawian cichlids, with females carrying eggs for roughly three weeks. It was long sold under the name Sciaenochromis ahli, so older references may use that name. For a fishkeeper ready to provide a spacious setup, this is a genuinely rewarding and manageable species.
