About

The elegant catfish (Corydoras elegans) is one of those species that quietly surprises you once it settles in. Native to the upper Amazon basin in South America, it shares the peaceful, gregarious nature typical of its genus but breaks from the crowd in one notable way: unlike most cories that spend their entire lives hugging the substrate, this species regularly leaves the bottom and gathers in loose groups at midwater. That alone makes it worth a second look in a community setup. It belongs to the informally recognized elegans group, a cluster of closely related species with overlapping color patterns, some of which are still awaiting formal scientific description. Like all callichthyid catfishes, it carries bony plates instead of scales and is capable of gulping air at the surface using a modified, highly vascularized section of intestine. You will see this occasionally, and it is perfectly normal behavior. The pectoral fin spines deserve a mention: they can puncture skin, and the associated glandular secretions are thought to be mildly venomous, so handle these fish carefully. Keep them in groups of at least six to bring out their natural confidence and activity. A long-lived fish with the right care, they reward patient keepers who give them space and good company.
