The anchor catfish (Erethistes jerdoni) is a diminutive bottom-dweller from the slow-moving hill streams, rivers, and seasonal wetlands of India and Bangladesh. In the wild it favors sandy substrates and gentle currents, and that preference carries straight into the aquarium. A soft, sandy bottom and low flow will keep this fish comfortable and active. Despite being labeled beginner-friendly, it rewards some attention to setup details. It is a genuinely sluggish fish, spending much of its day tucked away and largely motionless, so don't mistake inactivity for illness. Come nightfall, things change, and you'll see it picking carefully across the substrate in search of food. Like many small catfish, it does noticeably better in a group. Kept alone it tends to stay hidden almost around the clock, but a small shoal brings out more confident, visible behavior. At one to one-and-a-half inches fully grown, it fits comfortably into a nano or community setup alongside other small, peaceful species. Its modest size, calm temperament, and straightforward diet make it a genuinely good choice for newer keepers who want something a little different from the usual community fish lineup.
