The Nile puffer (Tetraodon lineatus) is one of the biggest freshwater puffers you're likely to encounter in the hobby, reaching close to 18 inches as an adult. In the wild it ranges across a huge swath of Africa, from the Nile and Chad basins west through Senegal and the Volta River system, turning up as far east as Kenya's Lake Turkana. It inhabits large rivers, gravitating toward open water as well as weedy margins where it hunts mollusks and whatever else crosses its path. That predatory mindset is the defining trait of this fish: it is deeply territorial and aggressively intolerant of virtually every tankmate, viewing most other creatures as competition, threat, or a potential meal. Plan on keeping it alone. Like other puffers, it swims using its pectoral fins for most maneuvering, which gives it that characteristic hovering quality and the remarkable ability to rotate in place while keeping an eye on something. Genuinely unusual behavior in fish. Youngsters often bury themselves in sandy substrate, a habit that tends to fade with age. These fish are intelligent, quickly learn to recognize their keeper, and will beg enthusiastically for food, so overfeeding is a genuine risk. Handle with extreme caution: their fused beak-like teeth and powerful jaws can cause serious injury, and tongs should always be used for feeding.
