The false network catfish (Corydoras sodalis) is a small, armored bottom-dweller from the upper Amazon basin, collected in both Loreto, Peru and Amazonas, Brazil. Like all members of this enormous genus, currently numbering well over 180 described species, it carries two rows of bony plates along its flanks rather than ordinary scales, giving it that characteristic chunky, tank-like profile. One of its more endearing quirks is its ability to breathe atmospheric air by gulping at the surface, a trait made possible by a modified, highly vascularized section of intestine. In a healthy tank this is perfectly normal behavior; if you notice it happening far more frequently than usual, treat it as a gentle nudge to check your water quality. Socially, this species genuinely needs companions. A group of at least six is the real starting point. Smaller numbers often result in shy, inactive fish that spend most of their time hiding. In a proper group they become noticeably more confident and entertaining, and that eye-tilting behavior, where they angle their gaze downward to inspect the substrate, never really gets old. Peaceful tankmates like small characins or dwarf cichlids work well alongside them. One thing worth noting is that the pectoral fin spines are sharp and catch easily in nets, so handle with care when moving them. Given proper conditions, these little cats can live a remarkably long time.
