The blackcap basslet (Gramma melacara) is a small but visually bold fish from the deeper reef zones of the Western Atlantic, including the Bahamas and the Caribbean coast of Central America. Its most recognizable feature is the sharply contrasting color pattern: a deep violet-purple body capped by a jet-black crown that runs from the forehead back through the dorsal area. In the wild, this species lives on nearly vertical rock faces and deep drop-offs beyond the outer reef, typically at depths below 30 meters, where it often swims upside-down along cave ceilings and overhangs. A behavior it carries straight into aquarium life. When startled, it ducks into crevices quickly, so a tank with plenty of rockwork and hiding spots is essential. It's a solitary species by nature, and while it can coexist with peaceful tankmates, it may become territorial toward other grammas or similarly shaped fish. Compared to its shallower-water relative the royal gramma, this fish tends to command a higher price due to the collection depths involved. That said, it adapts well to captive life and has even been bred in captivity, making it a rewarding choice for the intermediate saltwater keeper who can meet its need for structure and territory.
