The green-gold cory (Corydoras melanotaenia) is one of the more overlooked members of a massively popular genus, which is a shame because it's a genuinely attractive fish when kept in good health. Native to the Meta River basin in Colombia, it shares the typical cory body plan, two rows of bony plates along the flanks instead of scales, but stands out from common lookalikes like C. aeneus through its slightly more elongated build and a warm golden-yellow wash across the fins. Like all corydoras, it's a facultative air breather, meaning it can absorb oxygen from the atmosphere when needed. You'll see it dart to the surface and gulp air occasionally, which is perfectly normal behavior. If those trips become very frequent, that's your signal to check water quality. This species is firmly schooling by nature, and a group of six or more is really the minimum to bring out confident, active behavior. It's peaceful with virtually everything its own size, making it a solid fit for community tanks with small characins, cyprinids, dwarf cichlids, or other calm catfish. Keep it away from anything large or aggressive. One practical note: corys are not scavengers that will tidy your substrate on their own. They need targeted feedings with sinking foods to thrive long-term.
