The naked characin (Gymnocharacinus bergi) is a genuinely unusual fish with a backstory to match its looks. Found only in the Valcheta stream within Argentina's Rio Negro basin, this species holds the distinction of being the southernmost characid known, living in cool temperate waters far removed from the tropical rivers most of its relatives call home. What makes it visually peculiar is its skin: juveniles hatch with tiny, delicate scales, but these are gradually reabsorbed as the fish matures, leaving behind a greasy, sometimes granular or spongy-textured surface. Adult fish end up essentially scaleless, giving them a look unlike almost anything else you'd encounter in the characin family. This extreme endemism, confined to a single stream system, means wild populations are naturally limited, and the fish has adapted to conditions that are quite specific to that environment. In the aquarium, that translates to an intermediate care level, not because the fish is fragile in temperament, but because replicating stable, appropriate conditions matters more than it would for a hardier, wide-ranging species. For a keeper with some experience who wants something genuinely different from the usual South American schooling fish, this is a rewarding and conversation-starting choice.
