The Halfbarred Goby (Amblygobius semicinctus) is a small, unassuming fish from the sheltered lagoons and estuaries of the Indian Ocean, where it favors silty, low-energy environments over sandy or rubble-strewn bottoms. In the wild it tends to be found in pairs, hovering close to the substrate near a burrow tucked beneath rock or rubble. A monogamous lifestyle that's relatively uncommon among gobies. Its body carries the broken banding pattern typical of the Amblygobius genus, offering decent camouflage against mixed sediment. In the aquarium it behaves much the same way, spending most of its time near the bottom, sifting through sand and grazing on whatever it can find. Its natural diet spans filamentous algae, small copepods, polychaetes, and a variety of tiny crustaceans, so a tank with a mature, populated sandbed suits it well. It's a genuinely peaceful fish and mixes well with other non-aggressive species. The relatively small adult size and straightforward feeding habits make it a reasonable choice for newer saltwater keepers, provided the tank has adequate sand depth and hiding spots. If you can source a bonded pair, all the better. They tend to thrive together and are interesting to observe as they share territory around a burrow entrance.
