Found in the rocky and open waters of Lake Victoria, Haplochromis perrieri is a predatory cichlid with a straightforward approach to life: if it fits in the mouth, it's food. Lake Victoria's cichlid flock is one of the great evolutionary stories in freshwater biology, and this species sits firmly on the hunting end of that spectrum. Its piscivorous nature means tankmate selection is the single most important decision you'll make when keeping it. Anything small enough to swallow will eventually disappear. Stick to robust companions that are clearly too large to be targeted, and preferably other cichlids with the temperament to hold their own. Like most Victorian haplochromines, it carries a certain aggression that goes beyond simple predation, so a spacious tank with defined territories helps keep conflict manageable. This is an intermediate-level fish, not because its water requirements are demanding, but because its behavior requires a keeper who thinks carefully about stocking. Get the social dynamic right, though, and you have a genuinely interesting cichlid from one of the world's most ecologically significant lakes. One that can reward patient, experienced keepers for many years.
