The silver-tipped tetra (Hasemania nana) is a small, active characin from the São Francisco River basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil. One of those compact schooling fish that punches well above its size in terms of visual impact. The body carries warm copper and bronze tones, with each fin tipped in bright white or silver, giving the whole school a flickering quality as they move together. Sharp-eyed hobbyists may notice that this species lacks the small adipose fin found on most of its relatives, making it one of the few characids without one. All fish in the trade are captive bred, which means they're adaptable and generally unfussy about water chemistry. A real bonus for newer keepers. They're peaceful and community-friendly, doing well alongside most livebearers, danios, rasboras, Corydoras, and smaller dwarf cichlids. The one catch: they can show mild fin-nipping tendencies when kept in small numbers, so aim for a group of six or more, with ten being better. Keep them away from larger fish like angelfish that might treat them as a snack. Breeding is quite achievable in a dedicated spawning setup with fine-leaved plants and subdued lighting, and conditioning the adults on quality live and frozen foods usually gets results without too much fuss.
