Green Cactus Coral (Helioseris cucullata) is a Caribbean native found throughout the reef systems of the tropical Atlantic, where it tends to settle in lower-light zones like overhangs and deeper reef slopes. In the aquarium it forms the same broadly folded, ruffled plates that give it its alternate name, sunray lettuce coral, with coloration that typically runs in shades of green and brown depending on the zooxanthellae it hosts and the light it receives. The corallite structure is distinctive, with meandering valleys that catch the eye without demanding a lot of effort to keep healthy. Unlike many of its SPS cousins, this coral is genuinely forgiving when conditions aren't perfect, making it one of the more reasonable starting points for hobbyists who are newer to keeping LPS or plating corals. It asks for gentle flow rather than turbulent currents, and it does best under subdued lighting rather than the intense output many reef keepers default to. Place it toward the bottom or shaded side of the tank and resist the urge to blast it with flow, and it tends to settle in without much fuss. A solid choice if you want textural variety on the reef without taking on a high-maintenance species.
