The Imperial White Collared Yellow Catfish (Horabagrus nigricollaris) is the rarer of just two species in its genus, and one that tends to get overlooked partly because it's almost always sold as a juvenile alongside its close relative, Horabagrus brachysoma. Telling the two apart as youngsters is important, because H. brachysoma grows considerably larger and is impractical for most home setups. The key is the shoulder marking: in H. nigricollaris, the dark pigmentation wraps up and over the top of the body, creating the collar-like band that inspired both the species name and the common name. In H. brachysoma, the same marking is just a loose, roundish blotch that stays on the side. In the wild, this species comes from the hill stream sections of the Chalakudy River in Kerala, India, where water is clean and well-oxygenated. Behaviorally, it's a reasonable community fish as long as you're thoughtful about tankmates. Anything small enough to swallow is at risk, so aim for larger cyprinids, characins, cichlids, or other catfish of comparable size. Among its own kind it's relaxed, and can be kept alone or in a small group without conflict. Breeding has not been documented in captivity, so it remains a fish valued for its appearance and personality rather than as a breeding project.
